Religious Education at Highfield

At Highfield, our RE curriculum aims to nurture understanding and respect for diverse beliefs and cultures in children. In Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7), students explore basic beliefs and practices of various religions, fostering curiosity and respect for religious diversity. Progressing to Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11), they deepen their knowledge of key teachings, festivals, and ethical principles across different faiths, engaging in discussions on moral and philosophical issues from various perspectives. The curriculum emphasises religious knowledge, ethical thinking, and respectful dialogue to promote tolerance and critical thinking. Ongoing assessment ensures students grasp concepts of religious diversity and moral development, preparing them to appreciate and contribute positively to a multicultural society.

Right to withdraw from Religious Education

As a Church of England Voluntary Aided school, Religious Education is an important part of Highfield’s distinctive Christian curriculum and ethos. Parents and carers nevertheless have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE.

We would encourage any parent or carer considering withdrawal to discuss their concerns with the Headteacher first, so that the nature and content of the school’s RE provision can be explained and any questions considered. If, following this discussion, a parent or carer wishes to exercise the right of withdrawal, please contact the Headteacher via the school office so that appropriate arrangements can be agreed.
