Physical Education at Highfield

At Highfield, our physical education (PE) curriculum aims to instil a love for physical activity and promote overall well-being in children. In Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7), students learn fundamental movement skills through various activities and games, emphasising coordination and teamwork. Moving to Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11), they build on these skills with more advanced techniques in sports and athletics, while also developing an understanding of fitness, health benefits, and sportsmanship. The curriculum focusses on fostering physical literacy, social interaction, and leadership through ongoing assessment of skill development and personal fitness progress. By engaging in PE, students cultivate lifelong habits of staying active and healthy.

Swimming and Water Safety at Highfield CE Primary School

At Highfield CE Primary School, we are committed to meeting the National Curriculum requirement that all pupils should be able to swim confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively, and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

To support this, all our Year 4 pupils attend weekly swimming lessons during the Summer term. These sessions are delivered by qualified swimming instructors at the Jubilee Sports Centre and are designed to build confidence, improve technique, and ensure every child has the opportunity to achieve the national expectations by the end of Key Stage 2.

We monitor and assess progress closely, and provide additional opportunities where needed to support pupils in meeting the expected standard.
