Our Local Area

This half term, Year 1/2 have been learning about our local area in Geography
This half term in Geography, Year 1/2 have been learning all about Our School and Local Area. We've been finding out more about the places around us and developing our skills as young geographers!
We began by looking at our school and some of the familiar buildings and features in the surrounding area, including our local church. We practised using geographical vocabulary such as near, far, left, right and route to describe where places are and how we can get to them.
We've also been developing our map-reading skills, learning how maps can help us represent real places and find our way around. The children have been thinking carefully about the positions of different features and how we can show them on a simple map.
More recently, we've been learning about compass directions, discovering how north, south, east and west can help us describe where things are. We've enjoyed putting our geographical knowledge to the test!
It's been lovely to see the children becoming more confident in talking about the world around them and beginning to see their familiar Year 1/2!
